Folk Music at The Boulder Coffeehouse

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

I just found out about this event happening across the street from us:

The Boulder Coffeehouse features Peter Fischman & Deb O’Hanlon, Saturday 7:30, April 11th!

PETER FISCHMAN is a hidden gem of a songwriter who ought to be widely known and lauded. His songs of home, friends, and family capture a moment or depict a place or event with the visual acuity of an Ansel Adams photograph. His wife DEB O’HANLON adds her beautiful clear voice. Together, they released “In His Own Words”, a CD of Peter’s songs, in 2008. Here’s what people say about it:

“Peter, this album is so moving. Song after song, I’m getting chills, tears, laughs, all of it. I think of my dear daughter [in] California whom I miss. I think of how very lucky I am to be living here in nature’s bounty with loved ones all around. On and on. You are a word wizard. Very tastefully produced and mixed also, not over done and heavy. Deb, your voice is amazing, so clear and true. It is a pleasure to listen to.”

“Kudos to Peter and Deb for a great job, well done. Been listening to the CD all week in my car. Very clever, thoughtful lyrics and beautiful harmonies. Quite the storyteller, Peter. Can’t pick a favorite just yet. I love “The Nearsighted Poet”. Makes me grin every time it plays. And “The Vegetable with Feet” is hilarious. Deb’s beautiful voice is so perfect on “Here in This Place” and “York, Maine”, it almost makes me want to move back to New England.”

And there will also be a new Secret Special Guest performance!

Proceeds will be shared between the host church and a local non-profit organization selected by the featured performers.

The Boulder Coffeehouse is a smoke-free, alcohol-free, fair-trade coffee, candlelit venue for folk and other musical genres, located at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church of Fitchburg, MA, 923 Main Street on the Upper Common. The show begins at 7:30

Twitter Pack
Okay, I broke down and signed up at twitter, for the store. Just dipping the toe in at the moment, and I will spend some time getting the lay of the land. (Aren’t mixed metaphors painful?) We are @RabbitHoleUsa, if you want to follow.

We will answer questions and stuff, if you want to send us a tweet. If you don’t know what twitter is, its a social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users’ updates (known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length. Apparently addictive.

A few twitter posts about Paul Harding’s book Tinker:

RiverRunBooks: “Tinkers” by Paul Harding is one of the best novels I’ve read in ages. He’s going to come to RiverRun in March!

readandbreathe: Just stumbled across Powell’s intvw with Paul Harding, author of “Tinkers”. One of the best lit debuts in a long time: http://bit.ly/300km6

readandbreathe: It’s going to be a late night. I’ve started Paul Harding’s “Tinkers” and can’t put it down. Why is there not more buzz about this book?!

He’ll be here on the 28th! Plan on reading the book this weekend, and will report back. So many glowing reviews.

Bicycles

bicycles in the snow
Yeah, it snowed last night, but it is melting and the sun is out – for the next few minutes at least. It is difficult for thoughts to not turn toward Spring and Spring-like things to do.

We are members of IndieBound.org:

The mission of the IndieBound.org community is to help people across the United States share and find independently-owned businesses. By connecting indie-conscious people with local businesses, we’re working to strengthen the health of Main Street ecosystems across the United States. Learn more about the community’s philosophy here.

They just added a fun new function to their site: the Indie Bike Shop Finder. Just put in your zip code, and it will find the shops in your area. The closest to us is Gamache Cyclery. They have a pretty cool website, and their security looks ferocious.

How to Qualify for a Free Guitar Lesson

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

We want to thank those who braced the cold and made it out for last weeks First Thursday in downtown Fitchburg. For those who missed out, we wanted to mention that we still have copies of Eddie Troxler’s book From Blues, Rock to Bach: A Beginning Guitar Method.

Buy one of those books from The Rabbit Hole and you will still be able to receive a gift certificate for one free guitar lesson with Eddie. The lessons happen over at the Cornerstone Perfoming Arts Center, accross the street from us. The book is only $10. A great deal if you are thinking of taking up the guitar, or desiring to improve the skills!

Coggshall Park

I was doing some research into the suspicious, and sad fire at Coggshall Park, and I discovered Erica’s blog In and Around Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

She writes:

Coggshall Park is something that really sets Fitchburg apart from other communities, and I hope that many of you will consider helping to protect it.

Indeed. Her post Friends of Coggshall has the information on how to become a member of the park. While you are there, be sure to read her post on the waterfall at the park, and how to find it.

Fitchburg First Thursday

Bijou Theatre, Fitchburg, Massachusetts

I’m not exactly sure from what year this postcard is from. The illustrator captured a great angle from which to view our downtown. Downtowns change and adapt to current uses, but Fitchburg is lucky to have so much of that great architecture still here.

We hope to see you this evening. Not only will we have guitarist Eddie Troxler playing this evening, beginning at five o’clock, but we will also have sales on just about everything in the store starting at 4:00. All kinds of great stuff  happening. The Fitchburg Art Museum will have free admission tonight beginning at 4:00 and stay open until 8:00, as one example.

In his book American Gods, Neil Gaiman has a character say:

“What I say is, a town isn’t a town without a bookstore. It may call itself a town, but unless it’s got a bookstore, it knows it’s not fooling a soul.”

We are kinda biased, but we would have to agree.

Townsend Trails

Townsend State Forest
First of all, check out this amazing photo taken in West Townsend by Patrick Campagnone. You can click the photo to see more of his work. Secondly, help is needed this Saturday to clear Townsend trails. Many trails were made nearly impassable by that ice storm.

From the Sentinel and Enterprise article:

Volunteers are asked to meet at Doyle Conservation Center between 8 and 9 a.m. or noon and 1 p.m. Saturday. Crews will be out clearing trails from 9 p.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Through the rabbit hole

Thursday, February 5th, 5-7pm: Eddie Troxler will be performing a solo guitar concert and book signing at The Rabbit Hole. FREE introductory guitar lesson at Cornerstone Performing Arts with purchase of his book From Blues, Rock to Bach: A beginning guitar method.

Eddy Troxler has been a working musician for the past twenty years as well as a successful teacher for the past eight years. He performs regularly in the New England area with various blues, rock and jazz bands as well as solo classical gigs.

I’ve heard him play at Destare, and he is very good. We are so glad to be able have him hang around here that night. We also plan on having some other stuff going on here. It will be worth your while to brace the cold and head downtown.

Baseball book signing

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Thanks to all who came out Saturday, and made the baseball book signing a success. Unfortunately, Jack Walsh, author of Baseball’s Good Guys, couldn’t make it at the last minute. But Rip Pallotta, author of One Day in Mudville and Richard Letarte, author of That One Glorious Season, put on a great show. A fascinating discussion about the some times strange turns baseball history has taken proved engrossing even for those who don’t follow sports.

People turned out to support local authors, and had a great time.

Amy Newberg from Design at 639 brought over the quilt you can see in the background in some of the photos for us to use as decor and to help set the mood. You can contact us or Amy if you are interested in purchasing for your baseball fan.

We still have some signed books in stock.
